The Netherlands and Indoensia joined venture on CO2-problem

The Netherlands is about to participate in four projects in Indonesia in order to reduce it's production of CO2 gas. One project will use natural gas while three other projects will be aimed at retrieving gas from trash that can be used as energy.
An agreement between Indonesia and the Netherlands was signed earlier today. Dutch minister of Economic Affairs Maria van der Hoeven and Indonesian vice-minister for Planning, Lukita Diarsyah Tuwo, signed the deal in Jakarta.
The Netherlands will also help Indonesia recude output of CO2 in peatlands by creating a better water balance. The lowlands of Sumatra, Papua and an area in Kalimantan, where rice was grown on a large scale until some time ago, large quantities of CO2 are now escaping from peatlands.
By better managing the water in those areas the output can be reduced. In this way, Indonesia could be able to reach half of the reduction target set for the country. Dutch knowledge is very welcome in reaching this target.
Indonesia, just as the Netherlands, have both agreed in participating in the Copenhagen-agreement, in which a reduction of exhaust of greenhouse gases has been settled upon. International agreements to improve the climate allow countries like the Netherlands to realize their targets by investing in technology in other countries. Indonesia is used as part of this target in four projects.
The Netherlands will be able to reduce it's production of CO2 with one to two megatons a year, which is some 0.5 to 1 percent of the total production. In recent years, the Netherlands has also worked together with other countries, which means that the Netherlands has reached a reduction of 14 to 15 megatons a year.
Minister Van der Hoeven said that it was a good situation for both countries. "Due to projects in Indonesia, the Netherlands is able to reduce it's production of CO2. Indonesia is given support for projects that will help durable development in the country.
The Netherlands has 46 million euro available for the program that started back in 2008 and will last to 2012. The country will make available technology and money for projects that create durable energy.
